Pencil Up!

Sports fans are always looking for ways to show off their fanhood around the office. Devoted Boston Red Sox fans may have their offices covered in Red Sox posters and jerseys. Obsessed Atlanta Braves fans may have tomahawks showcased on office shelves. More subtle, but not necessarily less dedicated, fans can choose to decorate in cool ways also. This classic Cleveland Indians pencil cup is a discreet way of showing your fanhood to clients and co-workers without going overboard. It’ll do just as great of a job of reminding fans of their favorite players and of the last game they attended as any other promotional sporting event product would.

Teams Supporting Fans

It’s NBA Finals time in Los Angeles as the Lakers embarassed the Orlando Magic in the first game of the series last night. Lakers fans have been accused of being lame and unethusiastic at their home games, so you’d think they might need to give away a few basketball themed products to amp up the crowd. I doubt the fans will need any incentives to get hyped for this series, but I’m sure there will be some great giveaways to get the home crowd going early.

For those who can’t go to the Finals games, L.A. sports bars are great options for die-hard Lakers fans who couldn’t score tickets to the games and want to show their support for their favorite team. Wouldn’t it cool if the Lakers showed their appreciation for fans at those bars with some promotional barware, like that Lakers coolie?

Promotional Wavesticks

Wait. Aren’t those Thundersticks? Nope. European rugby fans turned our beloved Thundersticks into “Wavesticks.” Thundersticks gained its immense popularity in the United States when the fans of the Anaheim Angels (not yet, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim) turned up the noise against the San Francisco Giants at the 2002 World Series. Since then teams have showered fans and stadium visitors with promotional Thundersticks to help create an even greater home-field advantage.

Now, Thundersticks, a staple of American stadiums for nearly a decade, has been used by rugby fans to merely wave at opposing teams to distract them. I guess we can take solace in the fact that some Wavesticks have beads in them to create a maracas-like sounds.

What promotional sporting event item are they going to ruin next?

Anti-Team Apparel

Remember when it used to be good enough to support for your favorite teams by wearing team apparel that simply featured the team logo or the team name on it?

While fans have exhibited an unprecedent level of devotion to their favorite teams by purchasing and wearing the jerseys and team apparel of their favorite teams, they have also demonstrated their hatred of their favorite teams’ rivals with fan-made custom t-shirts. Even though we are accustomed to seeing fans support their teams with mild promotional hats and shirts, these hostile custom items will never cause people to question who you or your baby are rooting against ever again.
